Tim and Double Fine take a long time to get a game out the door, but that’s because endless care and love are put into every one… and because no one wants to take the risk of a DF IP. After Majesco performed horribly when it came to marketing Psychonauts, no one trusted that a DF game could sell, including the new axis of evil Activision Blizzard (I’m sorry you merged with them Blizz). But now that AB has surpassed EA, EA has been making some decisions that are definitely favoring the fan over the concern of selling a billion copies, but also in hopes that they will sell a billion copies.

Psychonauts was still a high ranking game as far as reviews were concerned, and if marketed properly, could have sold way better than it did. Now that Brutal Legend is in the spotlight because of the publisher hunt, plus being advertised with Jack Black’s name attached, it should sell significantly better. It will also, without a doubt, be an incredible game.

I still have my Gamestop preorder bonus T-Shirt from preordering the game in November 2007. First 666 people got one! I was worried I’d own a shirt for a game that never came out, but no worries now. As odd as this may sound, thank you EA. You have proven yourself to be a kinder god, as if there had been a gaming Vatican II.

Now, Activision Blizzard, calm yourself down. Guitar Hero has peaked and too many Call of Duty games will ruin the franchise. Let the Blizzard side of the company take over for a little bit, to develop and/or publish some real quality games.

I posted this as a comment on Kotaku, but I figured I’d keep it here as well:

I can’t stand people who complain about WoW ruining their lives. All that does is prove that they are weak human beings who don’t know how to manage time or are too easy to fall into addiction.

I played WoW through college, and I let it be majority of my life. All my friends played it, and I played with them, and I was happy with it. I still had a great GPA and exercised frequently, because I have this thing called self-discipline that apparently most parents don’t teach their kids anymore.

When I got my first job I quit for a year to focus on work. I picked it up again in August and started playing again after I went to Blizzcon, because I had forgotten how many friends I had made, and now it is fun reuniting with them for some of the best content and immersion I’ve ever seen in any game.

Yet I can still put the game down when I know I need to make sure my life doesn’t get utterly destroyed. Apparently some people don’t know how to do that, so instead they say BLIZZARD IS EVIL and WOW WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE. Wrong. You are ruining your life, for letting a game become top priority. How can you blame Blizzard for making too good of a game? Yet you turn this “good” into “addiction” and “addiction” must be bad!

WoW does not kill you. Cigarettes and alcohol don’t kill you. It’s how much of it you allow yourself to use it that kills you. You can’t blame inanimate objects, it’s the human interaction that seals the deal. Learn self-discipline, fight addiction, and quit blaming everyone else for your problems.

Dunkin Donuts

The ad: Rachael Ray drinks a Dunkin Donuts Cool Latte in a brief online ad. She is wearing a black-and-white fringed paisley scarf.
The complaint: Conservative pundit Michelle Malkin likens the scarf to the keffiyeh, a traditional Muslim headdress worn by some Palestinian extremists, calling Ray to task for promoting terrorism.
The verdict: While the paisley scarf was not a keffiyeh, and in fact was chosen by Ray’s stylist, Dunkin Donuts pulls the ad.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY? Some idiot really believes that Rachael Ray, some cooking show whiney bitch-ass mom, is planning on running into a crowd of people strapped to a bomb? Better yet, PROMOTING others to do so?

I swear the world gets stupider every day, and these idiots love attention.

Hope to see more of this eventually.

This week I have to work at a client’s office in NYC for a couple of days. My first work day in the city is almost over, and I have mixed feelings about it.

For starters, once I am sitting down and working, it is no different than anywhere else. The ability to work is of no concern and does not change much. The experience of getting here, going to lunch, and going home are the main concerns of the city.

Before I continue, I’d like to point out that living in the city is completely out of the question. This is not my lifestyle and I am not one to go out and enjoy the city night life. Living here is completely out of the question. I don’t know, I just don’t feel like I fit in the city whatsoever. It is nice to come into the city once in a while to see some things, but I would not feel comfortable being here every day of my life. I am a much bigger fan of the suburbs, and calmness. Not the noise and bustle of the city. It works for some people, but not for me. Maybe it’s just because I was raised in the suburbs. That leads me to the main issue with working in the city: the commute.

I don’t mind trains, I just do not want to have to catch one at 7:30AM to make it to work on time. Not to say I am not a morning person, I can handle staying up past midnight and then getting up at 7AM every day if I needed to. I like having a car because I have control of my situation. If there’s an emergency and I don’t have a car, it would suck. Plus I can leave whenever I want. There’s no way I could drive into this city every morning though. That would be horrible. So, once I spend an hour and a half commuting to work, I am exhausted, but it is just the beginning of the day. Now I know why people love coffee here.

Lunch, on the other hand, can be awesome. There are tons of places within walking distance, which is great for all seasons but winter. Moving from the office to the car to the place we eat to the car to the office leaves very little time outdoors during good weather. Getting a chance to stretch your legs and walk off lunch definitely has its advantages.

I am assuming going home will be worse than coming to work. I did not have to get here at 9AM because they told me to get here at 10, so my commute to work wasn’t loaded with a bunch of people. Going home could be a stampede for all I know.

I think the commute is the dealbreaker for me. I just do not want to do it, by car or train. I’d prefer not to lose those 3+ hours of the free time I have to the ride to work and back, and I am lucky I have been blessed with an education and the ability to choose not to live that way.

Update: Yup, the commute home is definitely worse. I don’t plan on ever doing that 5 times a week.

The sad thing is, most of the people in North Korea have no idea that games have advanced so much further than what is in this building. To them these could be absolutely incredible. It is almost kind of amazing to think that we are so spoiled and demand so much from games now, meanwhile the less fortunate could very well be thrilled with 8-bit non-classic games. It just goes to show you how fast technology has advanced in the past two decades. What we see as “games of our childhood” could very well be the only games some people in third-world countries will experience in their entire lives, and that’s if they are lucky enough to play any games at all.
